Under Section 56(2)(ib) of the Income Tax Act of 1961, winnings from lotteries, crossword puzzles, card games, or other games of any kind are taxable.

‘Other games of any kind’ include any television or electronic entertainment program in which people compete for prizes. The income from KBC TV shows and online gaming is therefore taxable under Section 56 of the I-T Act as ‘income from other sources. As per Section 115BB, such income is taxed at a flat rate of 30% plus applicable surcharges and cess.

Tax rates and procedures are governed by Section 115BB of the Income Tax Act, 1961. The tax rate for such income is 30% + Surcharge (if applicable) + 4% Cess under Section 115BB.
